A blue sky rises beyond distant mountains; a dreamy vista, overflowing with nature!
Trees pattern outwards & upwards into forests & groves, distant & close.
The "OVERLOOK" is a project years in the making. Every inch is fabulously intricate.
Vibrating with color & linework, the "OVERLOOK" is alive & aglow!
"OVERLOOK" is created entirely from hand-drawn, hand-carved woodblocks printed to paper.
It took us 3 years to complete the "OVERLOOK" woodcut, see our process below...
THE "OVERLOOK" COLOR WOODCUT (PROCESS)
Above is the key block for the "OVERLOOK" Woodcut. (In printmaking, everything is drawn in reverse.)
The key block is created first & printed last, after the color blocks.
In 2015, we finalized the key drawing & began carving. We then created 4 color blocks for the print.
All of the color in the "OVERLOOK" is printed from hand-drawn & hand-carved woodblocks.
See a carving video HERE!
We made 4 color blocks to create a varied spectrum of vibrant & earthy tones in the print.
Each block was planned & drawn in marker and then carved for printing.
When all of the blocks are cut and trimmed, we head to press to proof.
5 blocks are printed to create the "OVERLOOK" woodcut print.
More documentation of the making of "OVERLOOK" & its color blocks can be found HERE.
THE "OVERLOOK" COLOR WOODCUT (PRINTING)
To print each block, thin oil-based ink layers is rolled across the wood's surface.
A different color or color combination is applied to each block.
Printed impressions align in layers to build the image of the "OVERLOOK".
When all 5 blocks are printed, the "OVERLOOK" woodcut is complete!

"OVERLOOK" is our largest & most elaborate color woodcut to date.
At 46" x 30" it barely fits in the camera view!
After hundreds (thousands?) of hours at work drawing & carving, we are finished!
